Went here for the lunch special today which allows one several great choices to pick from. The environment is relaxing, the food was great and the service good. Will definitely go back and will highly recommend to friends.

By far the best Mexican restaurant in town. My wife is Mexican and she agrees that the food is authentic, great prices and the services is second to none. Their margaritas actually have tequila in them and not just sour mix. I have found my forever Mexican joint. Great job to the owner and staff.

Food was phenomenal. I personally order Pollo Loco every time I visit here, and the taste always proves amazing. Staff are sweet, and the overall atmosphere is decent. However, this building always has a new brand over them every few months, so this location will probably not be permanent.

We went once and it was great, we came back a second time to try taco Tuesday and had an awful experience. We both worked as servers in college so we understand when things happen and are very patient when we go out to eat, but it was one problem after another. We were seated & waited almost 20 minutes before we had to tell someone we hadn’t been greeted. 10 more minutes passed and someone finally came over. We ordered cheese dip to start and it was thick, and almost tasted sour. We ordered our tacos and the chicken was so wet with a watery grease that the tortillas were soaked. We finished what we could and asked for our check, we gave her our card & she was gone for 20 minutes. We saw her walking around, helping other tables, not sure what else she was doing. Made me extremely uncomfortable knowing someone had taken our debit card for 20 minutes. When we finally said something to the front , there was no sense of urgency. I don’t completely blame the server but the restaurant was definitely not running well. As avid Auburn/Opelika diners & ex service industry workers we know you can have poor service but good food or good service and poor food, can’t have both.

My first ever 1 star review of any establishment. Came for the first time and would have loved to experience the food, but the waiter straight up stranded us for about 35 minutes. We only got our chips and 1 round of drinks but he never came to take our order or at the very least refills for drinks. He only came back to the table after we went over to get him. We paid for our cheese dip and left. Worst service experience I think I’ve ever had.

We have eaten here many times, but today will be my last. Food was served cold and in a small quantity. It has been good in the past, but not consistent. We both ordered street tacos.

Service was virtually nonexistent. We got our food and that was the last time the waitress came back. Another server asked if he could help when we were done eating. Finally got a refill on our drink after finishing meal and it was not the drink I ordered.

Got tired of waiting for bill and went to cashier to get it so we could leave. Mentioned it wasn’t a good experience (we were never asked) and that we were not interested in coming back. Nobody asked what the issue was, what could be done to resolve issue or anything. Instead, just took our money.

We’ve had mixed experiences here in our other visits. Consistency is not their strong suit. It’s not worth the risk to me. Way too many other Mexican restaurants in town that care more about their customer’s experience and try to build loyalty. I’ll just go to those instead.

goddd do NOT come on cinco de mayo 😭 the food was so gross. i was so shocked to see how empty it was today, but it was lunch, so i thought it was nothing. but it must've been because the food was so bad today. we went because my parents said it was really good the last time they were here, but the quality today is just bad. they had a limited menu for cinco de mayo, which typically i would get, but all the options were virtually the same. they didnt have any metal silverware, just plastic. my steak fajitas tasted like cheap barbecue. i hate leaving restaurants with an empty stomach after having to pay for all my food.

Searched for El Rey, and landed at EL JEFE(BOSS sounds better anyway 🤣). Late night Wednesday date was THAT much better once we received our beautiful drinks. Presentation and service by our wonderful waitress, mi amiga nueva Daisy(young lady with blonde highlights), made my night after a rough day. Heck, our straws alone excited me! Food wasn't the most authentic, but was tasty enough, especially for the price. Overall, a whole vibe with a mixture of Bachata y Reggaeton to liven the place up at night. Muchas Gracias por el servício.

VERY DISAPPOINTED! We come to the area once a month and stop at El Jefe. This time was terrible. Whatever they cleaned with lingered in the air to start with. My meal was wrong but NOTHING tasted good. The only reason I gave it a two star is because the margarita was ok. We won’t return now.

A delightful restaurant with generous proportions and excellent taste.

We had the fajitas, burritos, tacos and nachos. Plus two pitchers of Margaritas.

They have different specials depending on the day of the week.

Attentive staff. Restaurant is decorated with a Día de Muertos theme. Recommend for everything from date night to family outing.

Next time I’ll take pictures rather than just scarf up the food!

first time i’ve ever thought about giving a 1 star review. i’m usually super optimistic about places and do my best to have a good time no matter what. our waitor stranded us for about 40 minutes after getting us waters and cheese dip. didn’t come to take our orders until someone from our party went up to ask for him to come take our orders. probably the worst experience i’ve had at a restaurant. should’ve never tried something over my love, Agave.

First time I’ve ever went to a restaurant and been neglected by the waiter for 40 minutes. He dropped off the cheese dip and dude was gone for 40. We paid for the dip and left it was an insanely awful experience that shouldn’t happen in the 21st century.

Food was ok. The service was terrible. Our server brought out the wrong food twice. My husband had an empty drink cup for 10 minutes. We finally had to ask for our check. This was at 11:30 and there were only 2-3 other tables in the whole restaurant. The other tables even had other servers, so ours really just wasn't paying any attention. Go to El Ranchero. The food is way better, and the service is great.

Waitress, Alexa, had a nonchalant when we made complaints about our food. Spoke to us in English and each time we complained, proceeded to laugh and speak in Spanish to her coworkers. After we brought the concern to her attention, she stated that “there’s nothing I can do”.

This was off putting, to say the least. Please address this issue. Thank you.

Worse service I've ever gotten anywhere had to ask for cheese dip 3 times got a dr pepper to drink and when I wanted a refill I couldn't get one because it was 30 minutes before they closed and they were cleaning the drink machine so I had to get water and the service was awful I'll never go back again

We've been here several times and we have enjoyed it the food has been great & the service has been wonderful. However, I went to the ladies restroom and looked up, a big mistake. There is mold on the ceiling/wall that separates the ladies bathroom from the kitchen. I don't know about anybody else, but I won't be back.

Food is typical of most Mexican restaurants in this area. It was fine, but only average. Service was ok, but our server forgot our drinks and we had to ask twice. Atmosphere is nice decor but I will not return to a restaurant that has flies in the dining room. Several pestered us during the meal. Yuck.

This place has changed , my steak quesadilla they started adding all this stuff without telling you, the man there did fix my quesadilla but I had requested rice and never got it and only one bathroom worked in the women's restroom, just overall a bad experience and no silverware just plastic

Highly disappointed in the service I received today. I don’t typically complain because I myself work in the service industry. I understand that we came about 10 minutes after 9 and it’s kinda late however if they were going to close they could have turned us away at the door and we could have just went somewhere else, the server rushed us to order because the kitchen was going to close, the drink I ordered from the bar tasted terrible. She only checked on us to give us the check, meanwhile they cut the music and lights off while we were still eating. Maybe 2 minutes after we received our food. Then when she brought us the check she had a open candy bar In her hand which quite frankly is so inappropriate and unsanitary. The food was great and I have no complaints regarding that. I just felt like they didn’t want us there.

Restaurant wasn't clean and bathrooms were disgusting. Service was slow but our waitress showed she was definitely working with a handicap so im not gonna fault her. We did have drinks just 2 cokes they were flat and the replacements were no better. I had enchiladas dinner. Presentation was on spot they just forgot taste there wasn't any. Wife had steak fajitas were over cooked and very greasy. And you can forget the taste as well. Don't know how you can mess up onions, bell pepper and steak. That combo creates its own favor. These fajitas also had mushrooms, yellow squash and zucchini in them. Different, but could have been good if there was a taste. Maybe we should have had drinks. It look like most patrons in the restaurant were drinking. Maybe we wouldn't have noticed the nasty food.

Sat there for 30 minutes without getting our order taken, it wasn’t even busy. Our waiter forgot about us, she was apologetic but it was overall very unprofessional. All we were able to get was drinks. Sprite was completely flat and the sweet tea didn’t even taste like tea.

We use to go 1x a week and always charged our meal. Be aware of what is being charged to you. I left a 20% tip as I usually do and I saved the receipt this time since I expected I was overcharged last time, and looking back I was.. Sure enough the charge again was higher. I called the phone number on the receipt to be told he didn’t own the restaurant. So unfortunately I had to dispute this charge.

I love this place so much. I come here probably more than i should but it's a great atmosphere, inexpensive, great food and portion sizes. I highly recommend for any occasion. Sometimes there's loud music but for the most part it fits the mood of the place.

I have worked in the restaurant in the restaurant industry and I am well aware of how it works. This is some of the worst service I have ever received. I asked my manager how much a drink was he told me the wrong price I asked for the manager, and he told me none was on site when that was not true.

Alright, I don't like to sugar coat anything, so I'm going to tell it how it is. First of all, I walked into the restaurant and the first thing I noticed was the overwhelming scent of urine; however, it wasn't primarily urine, it smelt like an actual bathroom wherever you were in the restaurant. The food was descent and the service wasn't that great, honestly. We never got a beverage refill nor chip refill. El Jefe translates to "The Boss'" and nothing about this establishment was "the boss." Overall, wouldn't recommend. <3

El Jefe is a hometown hero. It’s not trying to be anything that it’s not. It’s slightly gringo Mexican food with crazy good prices and great service. I love the place. The lunch specials are 7.95 with tea. Even steak fajitas. Who loves you like that? Nobody else. Enjoy.

Just had lunch there for the first time, and I was impressed 7.99 lunch special, with free sweet tea!
Food was delicious, and our Waiter was very nice, also loved the decor on the outside, and they have tables outside as well.
10/10 highly recommend!Will be back!

Loved the previous restaurant at this site and decided to try the new one. The lunch menu is plentiful, affordable and my food good but the place where I was sitting was quite dirty. The windows were so dirty I could not see outside and an "open" sign was hanging sideways. It made me wonder about the condition of the kitchen. My suggestion is close for a day and do a through cleaning.
