Los Sombreros Mexican Restaurant

Happened to find this gem while passing through town. The restaurant is off the road in a little strip center and hard to find if you are not looking for it, which is a shame.

This was one of the best Mexican meals 've had in a very long time. The chips and salsa were out of this world. The chips so light and airy, absolutely fantastic. We split a chicken dish that was juicy and really awesome.

Unfortunately for me, I live about 400 miles north, but if I ever am passing through again, I'll make sure to visit.

Top notch Mexican food. The food is always fresh and delicious. To-go orders are always quick with almost no waiting. The people are always nice and a pleasure to deal with. The best part is the pricing/value of what you’re getting, not to mention the portions are always generous. Absolutely a 10-star restaurant!!

We ate lunch here while traveling through Birmingham on our way to Tuscaloosa. Our first visit and I think the food is very good. Had a spinach burrito, chalupa, refried beans and rice.

Good flavor with generous portions. The beers were pricey, about 3 bucks above what I'd expect, but all in all a tasty solid choice for Mexican. I would have looked liked to see some mole or adobo dishes on the menu

Prices are sky high here. Quesadilla was tasty but carne guisada funky. They also did not bring the tortillas so we could eat it and haven’t been by to see if everything ok since served. We sent the carne guisada back. Potato was raw. Yes. I said potato. In carne guisada. If you’re from San Antonio or points south, skip it.

Great authentic Mexican food with a huge selection. Portion sizes were very generous. Chips came out hot and salsa was delicious, something that not all Mexican restaurants get right. Very glad we found this place close to our hotel.

We’ve eaten here many times. It’s convenient and have always been satisfied. But I ordered the chicken soup with avocado I discovered at La Mesas, I enjoyed theirs so much. It was not edible. The chicken tacos for my grandson came as regular beef tacos, forgot the lettuce etc. Granddaughters chicken tacos came as beef enchilada. One other grandson ordered chicken fingers. I didn’t really notice until we got home with left overs that they didn’t receive what they had ordered. Neither one said a word. One grandson and myself did get our order. And the total was $55 plus tip for small lunch menu items. I am so disappointed. But that soup…. came behind the other orders and looked as though it had just been tossed together without real knowledge. Watery and the chicken chunks looked gray. I ate the avocado out of the soup and we left and went to Dunkin Donuts. We won’t go again.

$15 for a small cheap Tequila margaritas. Steak ranchero with rice and beans had no flavor to it.
Don't charge crazy amounts if you arent going to advertise the price.

I enjoyed the service, but the steak was not what I ordered because they were out. Instead of them telling me so I could make a different choice, they game me a smaller version and it was burnt. They took it back, gave me a new one and cut the price by $5. I guess a win, win. But I would have liked to decide for myself. Overall the service was 👍. The food was 👍. The bill was 😔😔

Always great service and great food! Come here to eat often and never disappointed! Very friendly! Have tried almost everything on the menu and love it all! All around amazing place to eat at for Sunday dinner, dates, meetings, and all! Always treated very well! Excellent, professional, and friendly atmosphere!

I'm not from Bessemer and was just passing through, but I was pleasantly surprised by this restaurant.

I have to say, I haven't had such good guacamole in a regular Mexican restaurant. I would say the quality of the guacamole I had was equal to those fancy restaurants that come and make it at your table.

In general it seemed like the quality of the food, and the atmosphere was good for the price point.

Excellent food, some tables sit next to walls where spots of food where smeared from who knows when. Decore is late 90s at best and took quite awhile for my bill to arrive. Overall, for hot food it’s a spot I can count on if I’m not on a time constraint.

1st time for me & man was I surprised. Huge portions of great tasting food. I had to take half of it home for later but eventually ate every bite.
I WILL DEFINITELY BE BACK!
We've been going to the other Mex places in McCalla but not anymore. If you haven't tried it you need to.

Excellent food. I ordered a chicken chimichanga and it was pretty standard but my husband ordered a beef chimichanga and it was shredded beef and really really yummy, almost like birra taco meat. Our waiter was incredible. Was watching us in order to come over to the table at just the right times to refill or take plates.

I use to order there all the time. I once thought they were the Mexican restaurant with the best Texas Quesadilla. The last 2 time time I ordered from them they have been ridiculous. They did not give me the chicken steak and shrimp that was suppose to come in my Quesadilla it was only chicken.

Decided to get our food to go (the atmosphere was dismal) and our server was incredibly rude. Rolled his eyes and told us to order at the bar as he was walking away. Would've gladly tipped him for just bringing out our food. Everyone else was fine, but we won't be back.

New to town and was suggested by a friend. The food was really good and prices were very reasonable. I enjoyed the lunch specials. Salsa was excellent as well. It's definitely a must for good Mexican food.

I only ordered the bean dip. Which is refried beans with cheese dip on top. 1st they have the best damn refried beans ever. I don't know what they put in them but they are awesome 👍. The queso is okay is not the best but not bad the combo is tasty. I say give it a go, I truly believe you want be disappointed.

It's in a little strip behind a convenience store, next to a Ford dealer. If you are nearby and crave an average cheesy-greasy plate of tacos/burritos/enchiladas et al, this will probably do.

$4 was a decent price, until I realized it was green water with lettuce and tomato that I had to cut up myself. No flavor at all. Ended up throwing it away.

Very surprised! We were passing through and google map searched and didn’t have high hopes. This place isn’t much to look at, especially from the outside, but our food was fantastic! For reference, we eat out Mexican more than anything, and we love authentic Mexican food but are down for the American tacos etc. too. The free salsa was actually excellent! We asked for salsa picosa and received three to try. The creamy green once was excellent, and the habanero was good too. My hubby’s American style taco was VERY good, the meat was perfect! We’d have ordered just these had we known, but his Chile poblano had the same meat and this part of his dish was delicious. The tamale wasn’t anything to write home about, but my shredded beef flautas were yummy. Even the beans and rice were flavored very well! Usually I skip these sides because they are so bland but not here. We will be back, possibly even on this trip.

Be careful if you order anything with chicken! We ordered take out and my chicken quesadilla was fine until the last bite there was a chicken bone in the chicken.

Came here on Cinco de Mayo and they were prepared! Wait was minimum, drink special was fair, tasted amazing. Free t-shirt for our table due to our total price. Out of towner, but highly recommend this restaurant for authentic Mexican and great drinks, with awesome service.

Our waiter was rued, questioned me when I told him my food was burned and it tasted burnt. He took my food and I waited for them to replace it finally we asked where was my food and was told they wasn't going to replace it because that's the way it was made. I'm a diabetic and needed to eat.I have never been to a restaurant where they didn't replace your food, I was always told the customer is always right especially when it comes to their food. I WILL NEVER EAT THERE AGAIN AND DON'T RECOMMEND THEM TO ANYONE ELSE!!!. THIS PLACE IS GARBAGE AND BELONGS IN THE TRASH 🤬🤬🤬

My first time visiting this place, I didn't know what to order, everything on the menu looked awesome, but I really had a taste for some shrimp, so told the watier,..that I wanted a burrito with shrimp....so he suggest that the fajita meal with shrimp rice and beans and lettuce the works,..same price but the fajita,had a little more topping...so I order the fajita....and it was great, ...I will be coming back... Thanks,!!!

We arrived 45 minutes before closing. They sat us in a booth but didn’t serve us. After waiting and watching employees eat their food and sit around. We left. Horrible service!
