About the Company

Most of our menu items are Mexican-inspired, created from an array of regional recipes. However, we are not of Mexican descent, nor do we claim our dishes taste like those you might have in Mexico. We do strive to make everything taste very good, though.

Quite simply one the best meals I've had this year. I got the carne asada with potatoes au gratin, hatch chiles, onions, and arugula. Awesome! Chips, queso and salsa were great too. Service was great. Cool old brick building on 2nd Avenue loft district. I will go back. Paid parking right next to restaurant.

All three hot sauces and their salsa are sweet & that's not something apparent from the menu so if you're like me and dislike sweet sauces then be weary of that. Decor & atmosphere is very nice but it is small and therefore crowded and loud. Server was obviously frustrated and disinterested in our table because we had kids who are trying to broaden their pallets, but are nevertheless still picky eaters. It was made very apparent we weren't their preferred clientele despite being apologetic and trying not to make any special requests besides getting plain quesadillas. I think unless you are in the mood for this specific "fusion" style then you may be better served trying the local food trucks which is what we should have done.

We met family for lunch. There is going to be a wait but it is well worth it. I had the salad with sautéed shrimp, what ever they dressing they used is delicious. Other meals were quesadillas, and the meatloaf. Started out with queso and chips and margaritas, fantastic.

This is a very cool place and very popular. The menu has just enough items to have good options and not so much that is hard to decide. The food I had was excellent. The service was very good indeed and it was a pleasant dinner. It is downtown, so street parking is really all that is available.

Not mexican, when I hear El Barrio I think street tacos. This was ranked number 3 in Birmingham....? Perry's Steakhouse was number 5? Maybe I am confused on good food. I do give credit for the ceviche, just wish there was more chips or tostadas with it. The Michelada was different, it was mostly ice and glass was small. My other half tried the pozole. She is mexican so I definitely had to hear about the terrible choice I made in choosing where to eat.

Great food in a busy, but comfortable restaurant. Plenty of choice in the menu and the drinks menu had a few cool choice as well.

Sitting at the bar made for very quick service, although it would've been nice to be left alone a little more, that's the nature of the beast sitting where we did.

However the food was top-tier and I would definitely recommend it!

On a solo trip, I wanted to get out and try a local place away from the hotel. Ordered el barrio salad with steak, and the potato taquitos. Delicious!!
This was my first time eating at a restaurant alone. I brought a book and chose to sit at a community table. Sat with others I didn’t know. 100% outside my comfort zone.
My waitress was kind and helpful.
Would recommend this to anyone looking for something local, delicious, and different!

Great Restaurant, with an awesome menu and theme, but the Service was over the top Great making El Barrio a must do if you pass through Birmingham!

A nice Mexican themed Restaurant (with some Awkward north of the border southwest Native American decor) with great Ambiance and a crowd to match. It was a moderate (30 min) wait to be seated, but food came fast and drinks were kept full.

The menu was great and the food was delicious. Drink menu was average with above average beer selection. But what really set it apart was the service, we travel with young children so it can be a lot, but our server took extra care and attention of our 2 year old daughter making her feel so special and helping her through the dinner. She took our order fast, brought everything out quick and drinks never ran short.

I would come here again, whether it was date night, or a big family dinner the Restaurant works for everybody. One note—it can be busy, was a 30 min wait at 5:30 pm on a Friday, so be sure to plan ahead for your visit!

They go above and beyond to make sure there isn’t any cross contamination. We recommend 10/10. Add to your favorites in your maps incase you ever need a safe place while traveling. I got the steak tacos and my fiancé got the plantain nachos. They were very flavorful. We will definitely be back!

From HSV on day trip. Got there around 5pm on a Friday. Told wait would be an hour. Actual wait time hour and 30 minutes. Time enough to lubricate out viscerals with two rounds of margaritas which were quite good. Food was good. Clearly a chef involved. Service was good as well. Available but not overbearing. Solid 4 star. Atmosphere was cool. Bham is full of old properties that leave you wondering just what the heck was going on here back in the day. We’d go back for sure.

The side-lot is a horrible place to park. Never do it or you will probably be towed. It happened to myself and my wife's car as we were celebrating us being married with my coworkers and cost us over $300 to get our cars back!

As someone who is gluten free, El Barrio is one of my absolute favorite restaurants in Birmingham. The food, service & atmosphere are always superb. I don't believe I've ever left disappointed. My only complaint is the parking, but they have a dedicated spot for curbside pickup.

Great food, but it’s insane they don’t do reservations. Waits are always long, and they frequently seem to mix up the order of people who are in line.

Never come here if you have someplace to be after. We gave ourselves 3 hours before a 7 o’clock show and still barely had enough time to eat.

If they offered reservations, easy 5/5 stars.

I recently had dinner at El Barrio. I am giving a mixed review not due to the food (it was fine), but rather the experience.
It was a very rainy day and the only spot available was, conveniently (or so I thought), right in front of the restaurant. I parked my car in that spot and a young lady came out & very rudely told me I couldn’t park there. I told her it was a city street parking spot and saw no reason to not park. She said the street parking spot wasn’t available for parking because it was leased by El Barrio from the city. I’ve never experienced a city street parking space being leased to a business. Did I understand the lady correctly? Or was she incorrect?
