Authentic Mexican fare -- served with Southern flair!
The location and ambience were great. The mock-tail was awesome and the staff are kind but the food doesn’t really have the Hispanic flavor we’re craving. If you are not used to Hispanic food, you might enjoy it. We ordered the cheese deep, steak and shrimp combo fajitas, burritos, pozole, etc

Nice local Mexican/taco bar chain! No wait for a table for 2 just shy of 6pm on a Friday night, but was busy and filling up fast. Staff was very friendly and helpful, and food was ready amazingly quickly--probably had everything within 10 minutes. Note that they do not provide complimentary chips & salsa.
Ordered a Frozen Bushwacker cocktail (Happy Hour made it half-price 4-6, Mon-Fri), queso dip, Smoked Pork Burrito Bowl, and La Cucina w/ BBQ Pork and El Pastor tacos. The cocktail was excellent, tasting like Ovaltine mixed with coconut creme and a hint of coffee. Queso was great and very cheesy, though could have used some more chile flavor. Burrito bowl and tacos were solid, though no flavors really popped. Rice and beans that came with the tacos were pretty standard, fine quality but nothing exciting.

Very nice atmosphere with great an eclectic design and pops of personal touches with plants and vintage planters.Great service and the food was fantastic . To me , some of the side items on the menu are overpriced but otherwise a great experience. Our first time back since they moved to the main Street in Homewood. We got the nachos for an appetizer for five of us and it was really big, I think it could be shared with even more . We also got their guacamole, it won't disappoint, delicious !

We decided to give this a try after work! We used the Google map reserve feature to make reservations and it worked great! They had a table waiting on us when we got there! Parking is alittle tricky but we were able to find street parking after a few laps around. The staff was nice and the food was great! Definitely will go back! We didn’t get a chance to try dessert but heard that they had a lot of good options! Just make sure to allow a few extra minutes for finding parting!

The atmosphere was kind of cool. It seemed to be newer, but this is NOT a Mexican restaurant. The menu says they are famous for fried chicken...my husband's food was supposed to be a hot meal, but was cold. My daughter got a chicken quasadilla and the chicken was dry and all gristle, so she had to chew each bite for a long time. My son got a chicken burrito and the chicken was dry with a BBQ flavor. My meal was edible. There are no free chips and salsa either.
I do not recommend this place if you are wanting mexican food or anything other than the fried chicken. Someone at another table got that, and it looked pretty good.

I would say most things about our meal were good. Our server was a nice guy. I am putting this review up so hopefully something can be done about outdoor seating. Our entire meal we were swarmed by like 20 flies. One ended up in my margarita. At that point, we were over it and just left after paying. I would suggest more fans or even screen window coverings for outside. If you are a future guest save yourself the trouble and sit inside.

If you order take out, check your order before you leave the restaurant. They forget something crucial every time I’ve order to-go. (If you order salsa and queso, how do you forget to include chips?) Food is great, so I keep going back. Usually good service when dining in.

A little bland. Can use more flavorings. Tortilla chips are on the harder side

The salsas with chips were really good in price and were tasty, setting up some high expectations for the entree. However, the taco plate that I ordered, one al pastor and carnitas, came with co.pletely bland rice and beans. The tacos themselves were extremely mediocre and lacked a lot of flavor.
The ambience is okay, probably good if you're coming to get something at the bar and some chips and salsa, but the main food is lackluster at best.

Also recommend coming here for taco tuesdays where the tacos are 3 dollars!

Minimal customers in restaurant yet it took 15 minutes to get seated and no one really cared.
Margaritas were awful - 2 sips and the drink was done. Tasted like water. Worst I’ve ever had. NO CHIPS and SALSA. What a bunch of cheapos!
Food was cold. Wanted to charge me for cheese and salsa for my burrito. Will never return.
Bottom line - poor service and food, cheap drinks and entrees. Don’t see a future for this restaurant.

If you like Chipotle, Little Donkey makes Chipotle look like McDonalds. The place was packed on a Tuesday night. Good selection of food items. Careful though, anything you want with steak will cost about $8 more than any other meats available.

This has been our favorite restaurant to DoorDash or pick up from for over two years. However, I am so bummed by the quality of service and quality of food lately. We ordered Little Donkey via DoorDash this weekend and didn’t receive some of the most filling part of the meal for us; the rice and beans. The best they did was reimburse $7 for it, but that was frustrating because we were still left missing a big part of the meal for us. The weekend before, we ordered extra tortillas (ordering extra tortillas or extra anything is fairly pricy) so we were really bummed when they left out those that time as well.
We also notice that sometimes the guac is
AMAZING, while other times the quality is not very good. The inconsistency is frustrating, as when you catch their guac on a good day, it is GOOD GOOD, so you of course would hope it is like that every time.
I will also add that any time we order and pick up in store it is never ready and we almost always have to wait 15 minutes AFTER our pick up time. This has happened three out of three times for us, and it’s really confusing because this is a nice restaurant with high prices, so it seems as though they are not matching the quality of service with how expensive it is. Very disappointed to even write this review, but after having so many disappointing experiences, it seems like others should know!

So thankful for Bobby, Mary & Sam - their customer service skills are amazing! I didn’t realize the ceviche had scallops in it and I’m allergic. They were by my side, making sure I was okay, and offered to go down the street to get Benadryl. They even had an epipen ready just in case. On top of this level of service, the food I eventually ate was delicious! Will definitely come back but this time without accidentally trying scallops! lol

This place is my go-to for delicious Mexican food! I can't resist their burrito bowl it's so fresh and flavorful, and the ingredients always taste amazing. The service is top-notch too! My waiter was fantastic - attentive, friendly, and made the whole dining experience even more enjoyable. I wish I remembered his name to give him a personal shoutout, but major kudos to the staff for the excellent service!

Staff was nice and hospitable. I get steak fajitas everywhere I go for Tex-Mex, and these were by far the worst I've ever had in Birmingham. The food was ready quickly - which I suspect was the problem. My steak was undercooked in the middle, charred and unchewable on the outside. I didn't even make it home before I started to feel ill.

Stopped in to the Homewood location on a Sunday evening around 5. My husband and I opted to sit at the bar. Somewhat of a bad start when there was only one other couple sitting there, but we were left waiting for quite some time before the waitress ever came over. I was looking at the taps and she mentioned they were not working. Interesting as I saw another review a month ago that they were not working. Anyway, we ordered but it seemed to inconvenience the server who was more intent on cleaning than she was serving. My husband moved his empty beer bottle to the edge of the bar but it still didn’t catch her attention. Not a very attentive bartender. There was another bartender who came up and did wait on us who did appear more friendly. We ordered a salsa duo to start, which was fantastic. For entree we shared the fajitas, grilled chicken and steak. The food was super fresh, fresh tortillas as well! The atmosphere on the inside is somewhat drab. The colors and very dim lighting do not create much of an atmosphere, perhaps the outside might be better. Would go back again for the food, just hope the bartender learns a bit of customer service skills.

This was the worst experience in a mexican resteraunt ive ever had in my life. To start the chips wear cold and had a funky smell almost like a wet dog smell. The salsa was pure water with a brown tint, almost like hershey squirrted. Then I hear a little giggle behind me and I turn around, all neck. and see this employee named kendall. She proceded to grab all of our chips and crunch them up. I try to retalate but she bends me over the table and starts spanking me. I hear a ticking sound, I see a match behind me and proceeds to tell me to break wind. I then cut cheese on the match and blow off another consumers hair off clean.

Let's start at the end...our experience at the Little Donkey was not good from the start, and it did not get better as the night continued. We sat at the bar, while we waited for a table outside. No draft beer available...no carbon dioxide or nitrogen, I heard more than one reason (excuse) given. We realized that we had been overlooked for seating after seeing several other parties seated who arrived after us. A 30 minute wait was an hour! Server arrived promptly although I could not say the same for the chips and salsa ordered. I was happy to see that there were tamales on the menu, and very disappointed when they arrived room temperature and 90% dry, crumbly masa with the smallest amount of pork...the worst tamales I have ever had, without question. There is little to say that is redeeming about our dinner.

Stopped at Little Donkey on a Sunday afternoon recently. It was our first time there. Staff was very friendly and efficient, and restaurant was clean. It was nearly empty as we were late (3pm) eating lunch.
I ordered the fish tacos, my husband ordered nachos.
I was disappointed in the food on this day. The fish was heavily battered and was not even warm. I prefer grilled fish for tacos and it is my fault I did not ask. But the temp failure is on them.
My husband’s
nachos were light on beans and cheese, but had an excess of sour cream on top.
I have been told i should try again at a time that is not an off-time . I will try again. They were so nice 😊
