The waiter was on time with orders and service. Food was really delicious and was generous portions. I will definitely visit this restaurant in the future and highly recommend others.

They must have been running low on salsa. I've never been served so little. What we did get tasted like tomato sauce with a hint of picantè. Then when the waiter asked if we were ready to order when we hadn't even opened our menus yet, I responded with a "no". I don't think he heard me because he seemed to get an attitude when he asked quite a bit louder. I don't know how the food is because we left. I didn't like the waiter & the salsa sucked, so I had enough & went somewhere better.

They don't have shredded beef! I'm so sad. Hamburger is not a traditional Mexican preparation. And it isn't as good as shredded beef. However their pork was excellent. It was too early for a margarita so I'll have to try them again, unless I find a place in town with good shredded beef!

A friend wanted mexican food, and I had been wanting to try this place for about a year. So the stars aligned, and so El Mezcal was the destination. Colorful upbeat kinda vibe and friendly staff. I ordered my measuring stick combo plate of cheese enchilada and a beef taco combo. The combo plate was about what you would expect. Good and tasty. If you want basic Mexican restaurant style Mexican, you won't be disappointed. But I also ordered a street style chicken taco. And the game changed. Very good! I will return and delve a little deeper into the menu and leave an update. In summation, give this place a go if ya got a hankerin for some restaurant/Tex Mex food.

This place is a fantastic, hole in the wall spot! The service was very fast, even for a Friday night and fully packed. I got the vegetable fajitas and my partner got Chile rellenos. Amazing food, great portions. We will definitely be back when we are in Cullman.

Got my order wrong and the waiter was arguing with me that I did order what he brought to me. I said no I didn't. So I got my taco fahiat salad with beef instead of chicken and no guacamole on it. And in a few minutes he brought me some after I started to eat. So no I will no go back there again. It was my 1st time and last time for me. I8sure alot of people like it but that waiter.

won’t be back ever. charged us for refills on our sweet teas. asked if we wanted more chips and charged us for those as well. we ordered a cheese dip ($9) the chile colorado ($13) and 3 street tacos ($9) but our bill was at $50. I got a side of shredded cheese, that was maybe 2 ounces, AND WAS CHARGED 2.75! honestly spent a ridiculous amount of money for food that taste just the same at a more reasonably priced mexican restaurant.

EDIT: We gave them another try (many times now) and their food has seriously improved. The salsa is still great and the carnitas are BOMB!

Original post: Came here with a table of 4, was seated quickly and got our drinks, chips/salsa, and order taken promptly. The salsa was quite good...nice consistency and a hidden spice that snuck up the more you ate it.
The table ordered nachos, tacos, cheese dip, and a chimichanga.

Food came out on the colder side of warm. The grilled chicken nachos al carbon had plenty of food (chips, beans, chicken, and drizzled cheese), but the chicken was quite flavorless/bland.

The street style tacos I got were asada, al pastor, and just a plain ground beef. I expected the street tacos to have cilantro and onions on top, but not having it wasn't a deal breaker. The pork was tasty, the steak was ok, but the ground beef was quite watery and bland. Not recommended.

I was told the cheese dip was quite watery and mediocre, but had none myself. Was told the steak chimichanga was ok as well.

Speed of staff/food was good, salsa and chips were great, actual food was lackluster. Maybe would go back if they changed cooking staff/recipes.

This is my new favorite place to eat. The food is always hot and really good. The shrimp tacos are the best in town. The service is very friendly. The prices are about average for any of the local Mexican restaurants in town and I’m usually pretty stuffed after eating. I’ve never left hungry or felt like I didn’t get my moneys worth.

We can in and was seated very quickly after that the service went down hill are server was all over the place felt rushed to take are order. Food came out 5 minutes later and we had three big order first thought came to our minds was how did the cook it that quick. My wife ate her taco salad and got very sick all night throwing up and this went on into the night. I will never eat there again

Asked for a medium steak. Asked the waitress if could fix the issue and brought me back the same well done steak. Since I told the waitress I didn’t want it at that point the cook came out saying I was the one who was burnt and no clue about steaks. Also the steaks have way to much slat.

El Mezcal has some of the best carnitas I've ever had. So much flavor and tender pork with some nice crispy bits. It's almost the only thing I get when we go here I like them that much. You can get an entire plate of carnitas with rice and beans or I like to get the carnita street tacos. Complimentary chips and salsa and you can ask for hot salsa too which has a nice kick. Good margaritas. I am not accustomed to nor do I care for queso on my burritos so I always order them without or on the side. I like their queso for chips, just not on my plate smothering everything. (Thats more of the texmex or burrito suizo style rather than a ding on El Mezcal. All the mexican places around here pour queso on a lot of dishes.) Ususally go here at least once a month. Solid mexican food.

The food was great, but the service was not. Did not get our cheese dip till after our meal. Did not get a refill of our waters. The server was more worried about serving her family than taking care of the customers. We asked 3 times for a server, and even walked to the bar to ask for our server and was told to hang on so they could make there families drinks from the bar. We waited even longer and had to go to the manager to ask for a box and our ticket.

The server was Excellent, but the food and management…

The food tasted like it was a week old and definitely not appetizing at all.

The Margarita was nasty, it tasted like they haven’t cleaned their machine in a long while. And on top of that there’s a 21% Alcohol Tax on top of the regular price.

The manager rude, don’t care about his Customers, don’t want to even try to fix the problem or anything.

Love this place! My only caution is the Hot water in the bathroom is scalding hot And it needs to be adjusted so it's safe for hand washing. But other than that the food is amazing I always get the chicken street tacos! The margaritas are awesome too!

Excellent!!! Cleanest restaurant I’ve visited in a long, long time! Service was prompt and friendly! Miquel was very courteous. Hubs and I split chicken fajitas with corn and flour tortillas and it was phenomenal. Salsa is spot on! Prices were better than surrounding restaurants. WILL BE BACK!

I have been trying out all the local Mexican restaurants to see if I could find a good one. most of them are very 'diluted' when it comes to flavors and spice. not this place. this was the best and most authentic Mexican food I've had in years, besides my father's. my son is a picky eater, and he ate EVERY bite. we all ate every bite. I won't have to search anymore. I found my Mexican spot!

Got seated quickly for a sat night around 8. I think our waiter was new but he did ok.

The salsa is awesome & that’s why they get 4 stars. The Chile Colorado will light your as* up. Steak fajita nachos was lacking on the meat. Street tacos are decent.

Amazing staff and amazing food. Had the carnitas plate and two Coronas. Drove through for business and needed something home made.
Sat at the bar and had great service, any raza looking for for a good meal won’t be dissapointed.

This is by far one of the worst restaurants I have ever been in. Our friend asked 3 times for vodka and cranberry. After the 3rd time, we were told that they didn't serve that. They clearly had both ingredients sitting at the bar, so we were a little confused. We asked our server at the end of our meal about this and was told that it was just for looks and they didn't serve vodka. $11 for a large strawberry margarita that was nowhere near a large. My son's cheese quesadilla was so greasy they it made his stomach hurt. The steak tasted like cardboard. The fries with the chicken nuggets were raw. Received our check and was charged $13 for the margarita and 21% sales tax on just the drink. Our friends ordered beer and was only charged the 9% sales tax. Was also charged $1.25 for some tortillas with my meal. Asked the person who checked us out about the charges. "O we charge extra for flavoring and that sales tax on alcohol" Nowhere on the menu did it say anything about any of these charges. This place must be run by some money hungry people.

I would rate 0 ⭐ if possible!
1st was told couldn't make a cranberry and vodka because they didn't have the ingredients. All the food tasted like cardboard. Then got the bill and had fees that were not advertised. Asked the waiter again why they couldn't do a cranberry and vodka, he said they didn't sale the vodka!?!!
Probably some of the grossest food I have ever ate! 🤮

We stopped by tonight for dinner. What a disappointment. We had lunch here a few months ago and thought it was pretty good. Tonight was the complete opposite. The burrito had no flavor, and the taco salad had very pretty sad too. The ground beef was more of a mystery meat with odd chunks we were never able to identify. Service was not good either. A long wait to order and then after our food came out, it was cold. After that, we never got attended to again. There were no refills for drinks, and we never got some of what we ordered. I wish we could say it was because they were really busy, but I can't even give them that excuse.

Waitor was friendly but not knowledgeable about the menu. The beans had actual pieces of beans in them..and were delicious. My first impression of a Mexican restaurant is the salsa...this one lacked flavor and was sweet.

Myself and two daughters went for dinner and they were out of rice that’s the main thing for rice is main thing for meals the food was supposed to be hot it was barely warm they didn’t want to give us anything really because they didn’t have rice and I think it was a bad experience I will not go there again.

My husband and I went for lunch one day to give it a try since we had never been before. Got our drinks, chips and salsa quickly. It took awhile to get our food order taken because a large party came in and the staff had to set them up, no problem. We got our order taken then the large party got theirs taken about 10 minutes later. The large party had their order brought out to them about 20 minutes before our food came out even though ours was taken before and our orders were simple enchiladas.

Had a delicious lunch after the eye appointment and photoshoot today.. I got a steroid injection in my left eye.. Thanks Mom for helping me drive to Birmingham today when I couldn't see.. I had a great time hanging out with you! I love you! Also "El Mezcal" in Cullman is delicious.. My friends' McGuiver and Diana Perez started the business.. Wonderful Mexican food..
