El Tejano (Helena)

I have been going here for months. Today I arrived with 2 others and was advised they now charge for salsa. The chips are free but they charge for salsa. We also arrived at 12:30 and they only had a brunch menu. I ordered the American breakfast, eggs over easy, and sausage links per the menu. It must have been a typo because they brought out patties. The eggs came out sunny side up and it was difficult to cut with a metal fork. The sausage looked to have been cooked yesterday. I sent the sausage back for new ones. Same thing, seriously, the sausage patties were cooked so long there was NO grease in them.
I won’t be back, their prices have always been higher then Normal but there are in the country. Now they want me to pay for the salsa that I get free every where else. Without the tip, without alcohol and without salsa, total was $59.00

Excellent service! Very good food, nice atmosphere! I will definitely be coming back here to try some other items! I had the California burrito with shredded chicken but I got into eating it before I took a picture. IT was very good. Sophie told me that this chicken soup that they have is excellent! The waiter walked by me with an order of the soup and it smelled delicious so I will definitely take Sophie's advice in the future.

I visited the taco truck in Birmingham today. The guys were incredibly friendly and attentive. I received my tacos and was on my way in under five minutes. The ingredients were the absolute freshest, the taste was amazing, I am full and feel refreshed! Thank you so much for the great service!

We went as a party of 9 around 430pm.
We were seated immediately! Salsa and chips were good to hold us over while we waited for food! The steak tacos and plate were yummy. I also had a pina colada but it needed just a little more flavor 🤣 overall great experience .

Dog friendly and wonderful family type service. Perfect food. Guacamole seems made to order. Salsa is perfect. Been here many times but first time we brought the dogs. They cooked a plain pounded chicken breast filet for me that I shared between our two dogs at their patio dining today. They were about to snooze out after. I eat here once a week at least.

Welcoming atmosphere, fast, friendly service and the menu included a vegetarian subsection. Salsa and chips are included in the meal. The salsa is made from cooked tomatoes and comes with lots of onion flavor but without onion pieces, which makes it a bit unusual. The mushroom burrito tasted fresh and I appreciated the fact that they used the shredded cheese sparingly allowing the veggies to shine. I enjoyed the house-made hot sauce that offered a good bite and helped making the rather starchy meal interesting.
There was no vegetarian option on the lunch menu and I missed limes and pico de Gallo but this is still A good option in that area.

More authentic than I thought it would be! I really like that they used black beans with the meal instead of red or pinto. I ordered the Chilles Toreados with my meal (which are grilled until blistered Serrano peppers and onions). This was a perfect addition to the meal since I didn't have to add hot sauce to the dish!

This is our favorite latin influenced restaurant in our area. I appreciate the variety of plates offered as well as the drink choices. I especially recommend the Mexican coffee. It has a hint of cinnamon and vanilla. Don't be afraid to practice your Spanish, most of the staff speak fluently.

My family and I absolutely LOVE El Tejaño. We’ve been coming here regularly for many many months, and I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to submit a review. My personal favorite dishes are the Mexican nachos and the pollo loco.

The owners and staff are wonderful, and it’s a joy to see the same servers time and time again.

I called this location at closing and they still prepared dinner for me. I'm 5 months pregnant and was so hungry. I literally wanted nothing else but Mexican food. I really appreciate the staff taking care of me! My food was fresh and hot. I thoroughly enjoyed the service and the food. I will be back! Thank you for being so kind.

Went in today for lunch with my son. First time in probably a year. My son had a cheese burger and fries I had a taco and burrito off the lunch menu. The bacon on his burger wasn't cooked had to take it off to eat it. The beef in the burger and taco had a very strange taste. My son is grown and basically a cheese burger conesur, said it was the worst burger he had tasted. The salsa is definitely different from the last time I visited, and not for the better. I feel they are not using the same ingredients as in the past. Definitely feel its a very cheap grade of beef. Maybe new owners, I don't know. I had to get servers attention for refill on drinks and chips. It wasn't because they were busy, we were 1 of 3 couples. Total different experience from the last time I visited. Will not be returning

The fajitas were good. The salsa was really good. The cheese and beef dip was like soup. Asked to have it replaced and it didnt come back much better. The supreme nachos were just ok but wouldnt order them again. The house margarita had a watered down taste like they used a really cheap mix. Ending on a good note our service was amazing. She was very happy and attentive. Over all I gave it 2 stars because first and foremost its a restaurant and the food was just ok.

Salsa gad no flavor but the flavor it did have tasted like ketchup. Queso was very bland and watery and it was cold. The taco salad had no meat. The refried beans were runny. Steak chimichanga was very salty. Rice was mushy.

It ok if your hungry, but the overall rating is a 3 in my opinion, I just felt like the service was good, the food was good, and the atmosphere was good, I just don't think any of it was great. The food was a bit Bland and portions were a bit small for the price. Definitely some room for improvement at this establishment.

Ordered from their Lunch Menu. Lots of tasty choices at reasonable prices. The house salsa is at the top of such restaurants in Birmingham. The Pico de Gallo was great. Loved the fajitas, burritos and enchiladas.

Me and my family walked in after a long night out to eat some food and relax and right away my we noticed service problems. Our waiter brought out the wrong drinks and forgot our cheese dip. After we ordered it was a short wait but our rice and beans were all cold and just eating a few bites made me feel as though I had food poisoning. We left after just eating a few bites and paid $70. Would Not Recommend .

We had a terrible experience at this restaurant. The waiter brought us food. We did not even order. My chicken burrito had water coming out of it. The waiter did not write any of our order down, and could not speak English. Very frustrating. we will never eat there again. my wife had to eat something she did not even order.

This is one of our go to mexican places, as there are many in the area. They're all pretty similar and some are slightly better than others. This one is reliable. The prices are a little higher than others.

Extremely slow service. Left another restaurant because of the wait. Wish we had stayed, we could have been seated, ordered food and been eating by the time our food arrived. Ordered Mexican corn, paid $5. It was microwaved canned corn with cheap grated parmesan cheese on top. Had been microwaved too long. Was never offered another drink, which would have been nice as I needed the distraction while waiting on food. Understand being short staffed and struggling but should definitely learn to share with patrons so they could make choices on how long they wish to be trapped in an establishment. Will not return, could have dropped by a certain taco fast food place and been more pleased.

My husband and I have been here a couple times since moving to the area and absolutely love it here. They have great food and great service. The watermelon margs are the best we've ever had, and their steak nachos are to die for.

Upon walking in I just didn’t think it was going to be good but I have to say it was very good
They seem a little tight on their food
I ordered a taco salad and there was very little cheese and tomato’s
The cheese dip was excellent though definitely a top 3 in my book

Beware, they're going to try to rip you off, at least the guys operating their food truck. We placed our order, they tell us it's $31, I hand them a credit card and they tell me there's a 4% service charge for credit cards, no problem. Several minutes later, he hands me the machine to add the tip, the charge is $45. I didn't approve the charge, they approved it themselves before even handing it to me, the $1.24 cc service charge "magically" changed to $14.

I call them out, they fumbled around for several more minutes while a long line forms behind us. The guy comes back and hands me $5 saying they can't cancel the charge. I tell him that's not enough and someone else shows up and rudely tells me "That's how much we owe you". I tell him the math doesn't add up and he tells me "that's how much after tax and the cc fee, next order please".

Tax was already included and even if it wasn't, it still didn't add up. $31 + 14% fee = $35.34, NOT the $40 they charged me. I have a feeling they're running this scam on a lot of people, avoid them like the plague. Their food is way over salted anyway and overpriced, even before the fake extra charges they add.

Poor service!!! I have never had a waitress to agree that everything is terrible, but says it isn’t her fault (throwing the other staff under the bus); and not doing anything to accommodate my family. The margaritas are terrible; and will make you feel sick because it’s mostly juice. It is kid friendly, but the wait time was over an hour as we waited for our entree. Cinco de Mayo was an epic FAIL!!!

Got a lunch special. Salsa was yummy with super thin and crispy warm tortilla chips. Cheese dip was OK and over priced for the side bowl you get. Chimichanga was decent. I prefer mine more crispy and less burrito like in texture. A solid lunch spot.

If El Patron is closed and El Tejano is your only option, go to Publix and by a freezer meal. I have tried to eat here a few times and have been amazed and just how poor the service is and honestly how mediocre the food is. The salsa has a decent unique flavor but not a hint of spice. You might say “seems like you had a bad experience” that’s not true when I look around and see everyone else with the look of “do we have a server here?”

It was the first time I’ve ever seen a Mexican restaurant serve a fajita dish that wasn’t smoking. Like at all. Take a chance if you want to, you can have my table.

The day I darken that doorstep again is when that sign reads El Patron.

We stopped here on a whim since we were in the area and really wished that we hadn't. Ordered chicken fajitas for two and I thought they messed up and brought us steak due to the horrendous dark burnt color of the meat. Very dry and very rubbery along with a very dishonest amount of bell pepper and onion instead of meat, which I guess was okay since the vegetables were the most edible. The waitress was sweet and very attentive, but as far as the food McDonald's would have been the better option. We will never go back.

On 07/01/2022 I ordered a Burrito Relleno as usual. Beef, sour cream, guacamole, cheese dip on top are the normal ingredients. On 07/01 the burrito had onions and peppers but no sour cream or guacamole. On about the third bite I realized this and since I am allergic to onions I became very dismayed. My wife order an a la carte burrito and the ingredients were wrong as well. This restaurant is too good and has a too strong of a clientele for these kind of mistakes.

Had the pineapple fajita combo and it was delicious, for anyone wanting a taste of the tropics this is your dish. The combo of chicken, shrimp and beef is served in a cored out Roasted pineapple and the pineapple strips are layered on top.

Helena has had many Mexican restaurants that are average at best. I drive by this restaurant daily and never tried it expecting another mediocre meal. What a pleasant surprise. Excellent food, ice cold beer, great salsa, and excellent service. Best Mexican in Helena

Saw all the great reviews and was excited to try it. The queso and salsa had almost no flavor to them. The nachos were fine, a little greasy but felt home made and fresh. Was at least 80 degrees inside the restaurant and an extra charge for using a credit card???

Went the this restaurant and spent $60, when I asked for a to go box I was told that I needed to pay 75 cents because of the cost of the boxes. Bad business to me, I will Never be back and I will make sure to spread me experience to everyone that will listen to me.

My wife and I eat here fairly often. The owner and staff are always friendly and the food is delicious. Sometimes the wait times can me a little long on the food, but with the labor shortages these days, that is every restaurant. Would recommend.
