Las Trojas Cantina

Me and my boyfriend both went here and the place is absolutely so pretty, I was captivated by the lights to be honest. I feel as if this place could be a real good Mexican restaurant but their food was their downfall for me. I ordered the number 10 dinner special and the tacos were very gross. My boyfriend ordered the number 21 special and he didn’t even wanna finish his food. (We were both walking from the movie theater so we were VERY hungry) The only thing we really liked was the chips and queso, which to be fair, how could you mess up chips and queso? It was pretty decent. I then respectfully explained that the food I received was not up to par and I would like to try a different menu item, so I did. My new plate comes out and I take a bite, and I realize it’s their taco meat that’s so grotesque. I asked for the manager and explained it to her calmly asking for some kind of way to compensate and she was very understating and took the plate off my tab. The service was very nice, and the ladies were very sweet and understanding. Id love to come again if their food was switched up a bit, very nice place.

Prices are extremely high and they hardly give you any food. I'm ok with one of the other but not both. Tea is 4 dollars and the cheapest margarita is 12 dollars. Had to ask for a second bowl of chips because my 20 dollar entree didn't fill me up.

This restaurant was really great, we enjoyed the food and drinks. I ordered a large frozen peach margarita and my husband ordered a Bob Marley. WARNING……..When you say a large, you better believe that’s exactly what you’re going to get😁! The food was good, I had a Hawaiian Chicken Quesadilla and my husband had a Chicken Quesadilla. The décor was awesome and the service was too. We will definitely revisit this restaurant.

I've been a fan of this Las Trojas since it opened. The food has always been delicious and consistent. I've only had one bad experiance after countless times going and that was a long time ago. The staff I know is always professional, attentive, knowledgeable, and friendly.

I love everything I've had here. From the classics to the more interesting food, it's always delicious. I also work close by so I love that they have rotating lunch specials.

I haven't had a margarita here in awhile but the ones I've had before were great. (Especially the black margarita.👌)

Came here a little later than the usual dinner time. It was a light meal visit. Shrimp cocktail, fresh by the table guacamole, and fresh warm chips. I always make my judgement about a Mexican restuarant to start with based on the chips. It's a minor detail and fresh says attention to the details. The Shrimp cocktail was fantastic,the guacamole was excellant. The environment was completely inviting Hispanic, music muriels and all. I will plan to be back and it's likely to be a favorite place for Mexican food
2nd visit
Not so much, I ordered a burrito this time. I literally could not find the burrito on my plate, but when I did it tasted senged. Instead of a beef burrito, it was cream-of-beef burrito. The Chile relano saved it. It was very tasty. The atmosphere again made up for any downside of the burrito. May be a while before I'm back but not gonna give up on the place.

I went in here with couple friends and we really enjoyed our time here. They give you chips and salsa before you order anything which are dope. The food they served was pretty good as well. They are really up to date on their drinks. Everything we ordered looked on point and tasted good.

I ordered the pollo loco. It's my favorite Mexican dish. It was just ok here though. I asked for queso sauce to be added, but it wasn't. No big deal as I wasn't charged for it.

The service was horrible. The worst 😫 I have had in a long time didn't get food correct. I didn't check on us. Seemed like we were playing house with a kid having to ask many times for things. Party of 10. Wasn't really happy, and neither was the rest of our party. Sorry I left my food and didn't eat it paid and left like wow what just happened. Margarita taste horrible also.

This was my first visit to Las Trojas Cantina. I really enjoy great mexican cuisine. Las Trojas has a very festive and inviting atmosphere. We were disappointed at the lack of vegetarian options and the lack of knowledge or willingness of the server to guide us in selection. My husband and I settled for a fish option but were disappointed tilapia seemed to be the only fish option. The food was a little under seasoned as well. The portions were generous, but overall seemed overpriced for the quality of the meal. I'm glad for the local experience, but don't believe I would return if I discover another option.

Was definitely hungry, and cruising down 72 to maybe find a new spot. Decided on Las Trojas, but should've let the mostly empty parking lot be a big clue. It happens at some of the decent places in town, so my family and I slid on in. Nothing on the menu sounded appetizing, and their specials were weird. I settled on the Burrito Real, the wife got the chicken chimichanga, and my son got a taco salad. We had the complimentary chips, salsa and ordered queso blanco. Hard to mess these up, right? Welp... If the chips weren't out of a bag and slapped in a warmer I'd be surprised. The salsa was also bland and had the stench of pre-bought on it (maybe with added cilantro?). The queso was queso, but no kick whatsoever. The chicken on the chimichanga looked like pulled chicken out of a bag or can, and had the consistency of it. The refried beans were not refried, or really even fried for that matter. They were runny and tasteless. The ground beef they used was below the grade used at Taco Bell, but at least it seemed within its expiration. I don't know what seasoning they used on it, but it tasted like adobo, which works way better with poultry. No cumin, chili, cayenne, but definitely salty. The lettuce and full slice of tomato on the side looked fresh, so there's that. The wait staff was good and nice, and the food turn around was super quick (almost disturbingly so).

TLDR: Just don't. If they cut the menu down to half the size and concentrate on getting those dishes good, they might have something. Too much $ for the quality of food. You can put a lot of food on the plates, but that doesn't make it good value if it's inedible. The food gets 1 star over none because even though I ate very little, I suffered no intestinal distress.

I was so disappointed I ordered chimichangas one beef one chicken ( only wanted one but they said no because we was there after lunch so rude. different in price $8.00 from lunch menu so me and my wife only got one meal they lost $39.00 because of it and drinks at &13.00 a pice smh we would have had 2 I’m sure ) The beef was not seasoned it tasted like a ground up hamburger no seasoning at all (unless you put the chili sauce on table on it ) The chicken had a little season on it but neither of the chimichangas was crisp they were soggy. The Restaurant was clean and very large but empty at 6:30pm on a weekday ( should have seen how good it was from parking lot ) The food had no authenticity to the taste.wish this was not my first time here , last time and way over priced.

*In the past year you can see why this place has horrible reviews* This is the first time in years I’ve had a horrible experience. The food was not good. It was barely anyone in there but the waitress took 20 mins before even coming to the table. When I tell you the manager has a horrible attitude because they are the ones that overcooked our food. The huffing and eye rolling was uncaused for. We were kind and didn’t understand why he came out like that. I couldn’t believe they act like this. Everything is now store bought. Just buy taco shells from Walmart they do. Their chicken is dry too. I will never return.

I ordered a combination plate which was just ok and cold. It was a cheese enchilada, beef burrito, and chile relleno. My wife ordered the angel plate which is a chimichanga and there was a LOT of confusion over this plate. She then got a COLD ($19) steak chimichanga with nothing else. This came THIRTY! minutes after mine. The steak was burnt and unchewable. No one seemed to care

Went there on an evening where it was pretty outside and really hot and stuffy inside, so I asked if we could sit outside and the hostess said no and acted as if she spoke no English. So we asked our waiter and she said the same thing. We asked the gentleman who brought our drinks if the patio was closed because we were told we couldn't sit out there, and be said it wasn't closed and he wasn't sure why they told us no and when we asked for a manger, nobody speaks English then here comes becky and her friends and they were able to sit outside. NOPE I WONT BE BACK THAT'S RIDICULOUS!

Nice looking place with terribly slow service, poor quality (and pricey) drinks, and awful food. I knew we were walking into a texmex restaurant but, this was another level of bad. It took about 20 minutes for service to even get water, another 15 for drinks after that but, somehow less than 5 minutes for food?
We tried to get a bean & cheese burrito from the kids menu for our daughter and were told they only have that in a full size portion and could only get a bean burrito....

Went for a friend’s going away dinner. Ordered a taco salad with chicken and a bottled Coke. The salsa tasted like ketchup. That was a bad indication. The taco salad bowl was half full, bland, and the chicken was cold. It had not even been heated up. The “queso cheese” was a cold lump. Had to pull it apart with a fork in clumps. After trying to eat half the salad, I quit. It was just too bad. The best part of the whole meal? It was the bottled Coke. Bill total? $21. No thanks. Won’t be back again. Suggest new cooks who know what Mexican food tastes like and new management that makes sure the kitchen and the service are at least adequate. Otherwise, I’d highly suggest you go elsewhere and wait for this place to close.

Went for trivia on Thursday, was told when we got there that if he isn’t there by then he’s probably not coming. Even called ahead to ensure it was happening that day. Chicken and rice was decent and service was good.

The food is expensive but not good at all. The presentation is also bad. They need to train their waiter not to shrug and say I don't know to every question asked. I couldn't eat the food and spoke to the manager and told him I could not pay for such food. I ended up just paying for the drink.

Waited 45 minutes for takeout that was already ready for pickup at arrival. Desk kid ran to the back. Said wait 10 minutes. Kept ignoring me when I went up to check and asking to help other people. He walked away and could look behind for myself...order was ready the whole. Manager angry with me for being upset at being ignored for 45 minutes. Did make a new warm order though.

We went as a large group of 10 guys and the service was good. They kept up with refills, chips and salsa.

Server was very attentive and got everything on point.

This place had very unique decorations making it appealing and fun.

Once you put all those things together, we expected awesome food but wasn’t.

I ordered chicken enchiladas and they didn’t have enough salsa verde and chicken was dry.

Some of my coworkers complained about food not being what they hoped for.

Prices are also high when it comes to a Mexican restaurant.

Editing this positive review I left 4 years ago. I highly considered not doing this, but the more I thought about it the worse it felt to not edit my old review.

Yesterday we had the worst experience at this location: two people at our table ordered chimichangas, one person got the combo of two chimichangas with sides and the other just wanted the chimichangas a la carte. When we noticed that the bill charged us *more* for the two a la carte chimichangas than the combo we questioned the server, she redirected us to a manager. Rafael came to the table and proceeded to tell us that they weren’t trying to pull anything over on us and repeated that a lot. Even when the person at the table tried to reason with him, he just got more and more rude with us. We asked him if it would have been cheaper to just get the combo and say “no sides” to which he said yes, but didn’t offer to fix it. By the end we realized there was no point talking to him anymore because he was getting short and rude so in anger we told him we’d not return, he said “good” and stormed off. We paid the bill and left.

But this whole experience felt bad, I’ve been going there for more than 10 years now, we’ve had so many visits that were positive absolutely ruined by this guy. I don’t want to ever go back now.

They will try to bleed every penny they can from you. If you don't want the sides that come with your meal, they'll charge you extra to not have sides, and then be rude to you if you realize they charged you extra.

I ordered fish tacos and when they came out, they looked horrible. There was more spinach on them than fish. I ate one and the other two I just took the fish off and put it on one taco. I ordered a side of beans to go with my meal because I didn’t see on the menu that it came with it … anyways heres what my food looked it.

So freaking disappointed in THIS Las Trojas. I placed a to go order for chicken and steak fajita mix and a large cheese dip. The employee CONFIRMED my order and told me it would be 15 minutes before it would be ready. Ok cool. I go in after 15 minutes and waited an additional almost 10 minutes for my food. OK, not a deal breaker. I didn't check my bag when it was brought out because I could partially see that there was a lot of food in the bag. I get home about 30 minutes after picking up my order, open the bag and immediately was flabbergasted at the amount of food in the top container (steak and chicken). Then I had NO tortillas AT ALL. I called and a guy answered the phone and I told him what my issue was he placed me on a brief hold before the phone hung up😡. I called back and got a "hello". I thought I had dialed the wrong number. The lady knew it was me calling back because she verified my order w/o me telling her what it was. She laughed while trying to explain/ make excuses for why my order was wrong and to rectify the issue asked me if I wanted to come and get the 3 tortillas that comes with the order. I told her no and that I would never return. The food was EXPENSIVE and INCORRECT. Coming from a restaurant/bar owner I know that people have to WANT to come and spend their money with you. I am pissed. I could've eaten at my own establishment for FREE.

It's not the best Mexican food I've had, but the service is friendly and unrushed. Also, the servings are quite large so plan on sharing or ordering an appetizer for your entree. We go on Thursday nights for the trivia. The outcome depends on who is there and how many Margaritas various groups have had! Try it....

Went with another couple for a dinner out. This is our first trip here. The service was great. Our glasses were never empty and the food came fast with large portions. The menu had enough choices to satisfy any taste. Everyone enjoyed their meals. The atmosphere was lively and fresh looking. Very clean. Will come back here again.

My mom and I went to this location because we had eaten here previously and thought it would be a nice relaxing place to eat. However, our waitress had a sour attitude. She did not even ask us if we needed a refill of the whole time we were eating. Once I receive my food I had a hair in it! I lost my whole appetite. The waitress comes back after I made her aware of the hair, and asked what do I want to do? Did I want to not eat or get it again. I told her of course I wanted to get again and to make it to go. That’s the whole reason I went there was to eat . I was very hungry and had not eaten anything. I was really enjoying my food before I noticed the hair. It totally threw me for a loophole! My mom also got worried if she might of had hair in her food. The waitress took the food back and brought me another plate out to go. By the way this is a whole new waitress that brought the food out because our waitress just disappeared. When I receive my ticket it still had me rung up for the food with the hair. We told our new waitress about the miss ring for the food. That we feel like we should not have been charged because it was a hair in our food. He brought back the manager “Rafeal” who was extremely rude. He told us he will take the food out at no cost this time the next time he would not! My mother was extremely upset and told him she doubt that we’d be back here to eat anyway. He snatched the ticket and left. We are good loyal customers and the customer service was extremely horrible.

Came here a little later than the usual dinner time. It was a light meal visit. Shrimp cocktail, fresh by the table guacamole, and fresh warm chips. I always make my judgement about a Mexican restuarant to start with based on the chips. It's a minor detail and fresh says attention to the details. The Shrimp cocktail was fantastic,the guacamole was excellant. The environment was completely inviting Hispanic, music muriels and all. I will plan to be back and it's likely to be a favorite place for Mexican food
2nd visit
Not so much, I ordered a burrito this time. I literally could not find the burrito on my plate, but when I did it tasted senged. Instead of a beef burrito, it was cream-of-beef burrito. The Chile relano saved it. It was very tasty. The atmosphere again made up for any downside of the burrito. May be a while before I'm back but not gonna give up on the place.

We have been to this restaurant many times for large family events, trivia nights & dinners. This visit was absolutely the worse experience we have ever experienced here. Over time, this restaurant has gone downhill! Our server spoke no English and could never understand our orders & requests.

We requested cheese dip, never came.

We asked for the fajitas for 2. They brought for 1 and NEVER brought the other. There were 4 of us.

We asked for the charro beans and they brought black beans.

They never refilled chips, salsa or waters.

They had no problem taking our money without making anything right.

We asked to speak to someone who spoke English. The manager came and basically said “Oh Well” and cared less and did not care about customer service

My husband ALWAYS tips big! Not tonight!

We will never be back here!

i've been here probably about a dozen times and it only gets better honestly. the food is always great, the drinks are always amazing. i love the lighting and the atmosphere. it's legit probably my favorite mexican restaurant in madison

This used to be our go to for Mexican but quality has gone down some over the last few visits. Menu prices keep going up (which I can understand some), however, I feel the quality of food has gone down. I cut into my chili relleno and nothing but oil came out. Food was subpar. Service was a little slow but was okay. There was confusion with our server taking our bill and card but finally got it back.

Overall the food was good. Highly recommend the chorizo queso. My only complaint is that when we ordered a beer each, instead of asking us what size we wanted they brought us each the biggest one they had. An $11 elephant foot gallon. I was a bit irritated by that. It was like 3pm and we sat for 30+minutes after we would have left trying to finish them unsuccessfully. Just felt yucky on their part. They got over on us and because of it we probably won't be back.
