I haven’t had La Cocina in a very long while. I don’t even remember what I had. Mexican food is not one of my favorite foods but I do like it. I know ala Cocina has a pretty good reputation.
I scanned the online menu and it didn’t take me long to find the birria tacos. It came with two sides. I decided to try the charro beans and Spanish rice.
The email I received said my wait would be about 20 minutes. I drove to the restaurant and waited in my car for a bit.
When I walked in the restaurant there was someone attending to some tables. The was a sign to ring the bell to get some service but the waitress saw me. I told her that I had an online order and within a few minutes my food was ready.
When I got home I noticed there was chips and salsa in my bag as well as the other items I ordered. I didn’t realize my meal came with chips and salsa. I guess that’s not out of the ordinary but it was a pleasant surprise. Anyway I started with the rice and then with the beans. There was nothing really special with the rice but I don’t think I’ve had charro beans. They seem to be beans with what seemed like vienna sausage. It didn’t taste bad. I really didn’t know what to expect.
On the to birria tacos. The definite star of the show. Being that my food was take out there was some sogginess to the taco shell but the tacos held up pretty good. I dipped the first taco in the consommé (yes, I googled it). It was very savory and the meat was tender. I don’t eat a lot of authentic Mexican food but I know what good food tastes like. I definitely would recommend the birria tacos from La Cocina.

BEWARE! DO NOT EAT HERE UNLESS YOU LIKE FOOD POISONING!!!This place has been my favorite Mexican restaurant till tonight. I always have always ordered the same thing, Chicken and Steak Fajitas the food quality has gradually declined but tonight it dropped completely to un edible. I have NEVER had it so spicy to the point of not being able to eat 1 bite without a full glass of milk to leave in the mouth till the pain subsided. The chicken was so dry and over cooked it couldn't even be chewed, the same goes for the steak(what little steak there was). The vegetables (green bell pepper, onions, tomatoes and mushrooms) were absolutely RANCID! So much so I actually vomited after the first 2 bites. The tortillas were old and MOLDY and were hard and brittle. The rice and beans were the only thing edible and even they too were terrible!! I have now been throwing up ever since getting my food, less than one hour ago. What a complete WASTE of $25. Shame on you la cocina for selling me ROTTEN OLD FOOD that has caused me food POISONING

Delicious food, generally friendly staff, cozy vibes! Food may take a while to get to you during busiest hours, but is well worth it. Big serving sizes means you may need a to go box for certain dishes. Take out or dine-in, sure to be a tasty time, and staff recognize regulars and are happy to make conversation.

Chips and salsa are decent, fajitas are tasty, the churros and flan are great desserts, I've yet to find a meal I dislike here.

Today, my family and I had lunch at La Cocina, which turned out to be the worst dining experience we've ever had. For nearly 30 years, we've been loyal customers, but we've decided never to return after what happened today. Our meals were served with spoiled crema/sour cream, which they refused to acknowledge, despite it tasting and smelling like blue cheese—a cheese they don't even offer. Rather than remaking our meals or removing them from our bill, they chose to dispute our claims and demanded full payment for the spoiled food because we had consumed a portion of it. Maria L. insisted on us paying $20, a sum that cost them a long-standing customer and earned this negative review. We wished for a different outcome, but their appalling customer service and refusal to take responsibility have led us to sever ties with this establishment as of today, 8/9/2024.

***CHECK YOUR TO-GO RECEIPTS!!!!****

I’ve been coming to this restaurant for well over a decade, and this is the first time I’ve had to question the charges.
HIGHLY disappointed in the way the man handled the entire order.
I ordered a CHILDRENS burrito (6.99) and one a la carte burrito 6.99
The man (Isidro S) made up his mind on the phone that he was going to charge for an adult. 8.99

In addition, there are so many other upcharges after examining the receipt…

Used to love this place, but this is HIGHLY questionable business practice with up charging from a children to an adults as well as charging so many fees (see pics) just to place a to-go order
Not to mention the “to go gratuity” that was tacked on

La Cocina - A Hidden Gem in Mobile

I recently had the pleasure of dining at La Cocina in Mobile, Alabama, and it was a fantastic experience from start to finish. Starting with the beef tacos, I was initially surprised they used ground beef instead of pulled beef or chopped steak. While the ground beef was flavorful, I feel offering alternatives like pulled beef or chopped steak would elevate the dish and provide a more authentic experience.

The salsa was a delightful complement to the meal, bursting with freshness and just the right amount of kick. The ceviche was absolutely stellar—so fresh and flavorful that I can’t say enough good things about it. It truly left a lasting impression.

The chicken enchiladas, while delicious, were a bit on the dry side, likely due to the time of day I ordered them. A quick remedy with a bit of salsa, and they were back to their delightful self. The chips served were also fantastic—crisp and perfectly seasoned.

Overall, I was incredibly impressed with La Cocina, especially considering I dined there at 4 o’clock on a Monday. Coming from San Francisco, where I enjoy authentic Mexican cuisine almost daily, I can confidently say that La Cocina holds its own. If you’re in Mobile and craving Mexican food, this spot is a must-visit! A pulled beef or chopped steak option for the tacos would make it even better.

Poor experience overall. Waitress misheard my order and proceeded to bring out the wrong dish. She then tried to argue about it. The cups we were given were dirty and had residue inside. The worst part of this experience was that she took our payment without giving us the receipt, then charged us gratuity for a party of 4. Had to ask for the receipt after paying to see why we were shorted on change. Sketchy.

Still hands-down my fave Mexican food in Mobile. Chile Colorado is always on point, but it's hard to miss ordering anything. Delicious salsa too. Extremely snaky business. When you get your check you are already being charged a 20% tip. Once they hand you the bill they stand there until you give them your card to make you feel pressured so you do not see the 20% tip. Then when they bring you the charged receipt to sign they remove the itemized receipt and give you another spot to tip. If you do not pay attention and you again tip 20% you will be giving them unknowingly a 40% without realizing. I always tip 20% when the service is good but that should be at my will, not the companies.

No prices were shown on the ticket so you can’t see how much they are actually charging. When I ordered a Michelada with no alcohol only mineral water, it costed the same as it would with alcohol. I don’t think it’s right for them to charge that much for a tip. The place was also not very decorative. It was a total of $144 for 5 people so almost $30 for each person when the dishes on the menu showed prices of $11.99. Doesn’t make sense but I don’t recommend going there.
