A wonderful tapas and tequila location, where we met up with friends and enjoyed a variety of drinks and tapas. Thomas was patient with our order, allowing us to catch up, and ensured our drinks and food were ordered promptly so we could enjoy the evening without the kids. It's a great place to relax and enjoy dinner with friends.

First time dining here and I really wanted to like it. I was so excited to try the food here, but unfortunately was very disappointed.
The ambiance outside was very nice but the food really needs improvement. As an appetizer, the guacamole does not taste well with the sweet plantain chips it comes with. The mussels didn’t taste fresh but instead tasted dirty. It was very difficult to even eat. The churro for dessert came out cold, was hard and had an aftertaste of cleaning products. The plate i was served with was also chipped. Service was just ok.
Really hoping management takes advice and they improve their food and service.

Amazing food. Amazing drinks. Amazing service. My favorite restaurant

Edit: we just tried their brunch, everything was delicious. My new favorite place for brunch, if they opened earlier, I'd be there for breakfast all the time. This is what we ordered, from my most favorite, to the least (which was still yums):
Chilaquiles
Molletes
Huevos rancheros
Chicken quesadilla

Our other favorites are the sopa de tortilla and the churros

Went for my birthday lunch! Was so excited! The food was cold and stale tasting
The quesidillas were hard and stale, the tacos were cold
So disappointed
Wondered why we were the ONLY people there on a Tuesday for lunch

This is a nice place to meet folks for a protracted evening of grazing, or to figure out where you REALLY want to be.

Small plates are just that. If the space were a little more inviting it would be, well, more inviting. Concrete floor, open ceiling, lot's of varnished wood and windows looking over parking are the stark reality.
There are some meh moments on the menu and it's easy to get too many cheese / tortilla combinations but it can be fun and good too. Know this.
I think if the management would ease in some actual Tapas items the market is here. Now it's a fine line between Cheesy/Greasy Mexican and a precious upscale attempt. We go fairly often, but mainly b/c it's close and friends suggest it.
Fridas, La Paz, Mexico Lindo, Heck- Taco Mama - all have SOME of this menu already. A Tapas menu would differentiate this place...I would absolutely go much more often.

Fantastic spot. We had queso with chorizo, salad, beef flautas, chicken chilaquiles, and the steak item with jelly (that was not my favorite—nothing wrong just not my style).

Service was impeccable--very friendly and prompt but not obtrusive. Drinks were fantastic--go here.

This is THE place for tapas in Birmingham. There is nothing like their duck empanadas. Melt in your mouth with the perfect amount of cheese and pickled vegetables to break up the richness. The staff from the hostess to the back waiter, everyone, were so kind and attentive.
Lastly, the atmosphere here is perfect for an intimate date night.

This place is such a gem! The drinks are top notch and all the dishes we tried were fresh, creative and perfectly prepared! Totally recommend asking for a platter of different entrees and splitting everything! Definitely too good to just pick one! 🤤

I wish I took pictures of our dinner and dessert… but was too busy enjoying it!

It is always interesting to visit different parts of the country. The food and service were fantastic! Atmosphere? We sat at the bar and Hailey was engaging and had great recommendations. The atmosphere/clientele was interesting. I would not let the lack of social etiquette dissuade you from visiting this establishment. They had a wide varieties of tequila and tapas. Everything was delicious!

Excellent service and Spanish American food and a very nice staff, the location is very convenient for people in the area to walk to, and the turnaround time for a table is fairly quick, it's nearly unbeatable, the price on the food is cheaper for the part of town you'll find yourself in, I would highly recommend giving them a look, this locations service way beats the one located in Avondale..

My husband and I have dined here many times and love the place, so we decided to invite my brother and sister-in-law to celebrate her birthday. It was just excellent!!

First, the restaurant is beyond beautiful with the murals, decor, tiny ceiling lights, etc. We started with cocktails - Paloma (I always order this and it's the best in town), Ranch Water and a tequila neat. We shared the Sol y Luna Sampler, which is guacamole & pico de gallo w/ interesting assortment of chips - so fresh and delicious!

For dinner, I ordered the grilled salmon w/ garlic mashed potatoes while my brother got the cantina house salad topped w/ grilled salmon. Both were excellent. The salmon was cooked perfectly with a wonderful sear on the outside and so moist inside. My husband and SIL shared the Gambas al Ajillo (the cooked garlic in olive oil w/ red pepper is outstanding!), Shrimp Diabla on a bed of mashed sweet potatoes w/ crispy potatoes, and Red Snapper al Mojo de Ajo w/ shrimp and an amazing tomato & onion sauce and all this came with baskets of bread to soak up all those flavors. As you can see from the pictures, each dish was just beautiful. And, each of them tasted amazing (I was lucky enough to get to sample their dishes). The seafood was not overcooked and each tapa was so unique and flavorful. In addition to the delicious drinks and food, the service was excellent. The hostess made her rounds throughout the night to check on customers and our server took great care of us. The owner, Jorge, was also very attentive, periodically checking on us and helping to make my SIL's birthday very special.

So, based on this as well as our previous visits, I highly recommend this place. You won't be disappointed. We will be returning soon!!

Was wondering if the Sol y Luna could regain its former glory after being closed for so long. If anything, the food is better than it was before. The snapper and shrimp dish (pictured) was bright and delicious with just a touch of spice. The duck empanadas were somewhat untraditional wrappers (more like a triangle spring roll) but were really spectacular. Lobster tacos and mussels were also great dishes.

Outdoor seating was nice and the service was good. Would recommend reservations.

If you have not been to Sol y Luna - do yourself a favor and go NOW. The food and drinks are absolutely delicious. I have never had a meal here that I did not like. And the service is always thorough and friendly.

My husband and I hosted our rehearsal dinner here. We had 70 people there for dinner, and then hosted a welcome cocktail party afterwards. We could not have imagined a better venue for us to host this.

Jorge and Aimee (owners) are wonderful and so patient. Leading up to the event, I emailed Jorge many times - he never got annoyed with me and was always willing to answer questions/concerns I had. He is extremely genuine and personable.

Our guests are still raving about the food, the margaritas, and the atmosphere. It was all absolutely perfect!! I cannot recommend Soly y Luna enough.

Went for a 5:30 dinner with my wife, youngest daughter and two grandchildren expecting to get Guacamole dip & Tacos like we did a while back. Get there to find out they've eliminated them except for lunch. 8 year old & 3 year old don't really go for Salmon & Crab meat over chipotle tossed vegetables. Super service, fabulous ambiance, but I sure wish I had known that they have gone "White Table clothe" Mexican food. Hence the two star food rating. I think they aren't long for the Parke Lane location if they continue. Cheese in tortillas, $12 for kids. Hope it makes it.

Are here on a business trip. They do reservations, but thankfully took my 4 member walk in party as we went in for dinner early.

The food was mostly good. I ordered the crab enchiladas and they were delicious. My friend's duck empanadas left something to desired. Unfortunately, their mojitos were bitter as they used seltzer water instead of tonic. We had to ask the waiter to remake them and we were charged 2x for undrinkable first drinks and correct ones.

We stayed a while as it was a business dinner. Our churro dessert order was forgotten as well as a soda order. After flagging down the waiter after 20min, he said he'd reorder churros and comp them, which he did.

The atmosphere is loud due to high ceilings and concrete floors. I give it a 4 star for the crab enchiladas.

This place was SO good! The drinks, the menu, the ambience, the company. Marcos was our server and he was great! He came to the table a reasonable amount of times without being too much or too little. He was efficient. Accommodated my annoying habit of changing ingredients in what I order (like no chorizo in the queso. Refried beans instead of black beans. Etc) Marcos was sweet and personable. Everything we got was great! I got the shrimp quesadillas (I took the shrimp out and let my brother eat them LOL) my quesadilla was okay. As a cheese lover I felt like there was too much cheese. Or maybe too many flavors of different cheeses? I wasn’t a fan of the quesadillas for that reason. My brother LOVED the shrimp quesadillas (please go off his review of how amazingly delicious they were. I can be picky lol) Everything was delicious. They have options for gluten free, vegetarian, and even keto! It’s really a beautiful place. I’d definitely return!

This is one of my favorite places to go for lunch. The esthetics are beautiful. We always get the same booth. The waiter is always friendly. The sampler appetizer is my favorite - the plantain chips seem to be made fresh. I usually order the taquitos or the mussels. I’ve tried multiple dishes there, although they are all delicious, the two I mentioned are my go to. They have a sol y Luna margarita that I recommend as well. This is a tapas place, so the servings are on the small side. But I usually go with a group and we share.

Review №55

In a word, disappointing.

We were huge fans of the original Sol Y Luna, of Chef Castro and the relaxed atmosphere at his restaurant that was everything tapas stands for. Even though we'd heard good things about his son's revival of the name after it opened, we hadn't ever tried it until recently.

We had a reservation at 6:30 on a Friday night and even though the restaurant wasn't full, it felt like we were on a conveyor belt. Tapas is supposed to be relaxing, but there was nothing relaxing about this place! Our server had obviously had one too many Red Bulls, he was selling beers when ours were half-empty, picking up plates before they were finished, and before we decided what plate to order next, he was pushing the check at me! As far as I'm concerned, "turn and burn" and tapas are diametrically opposed concepts. This place is the former.

As for the food, it wasn't much better. The duck empanadas were OK but pretty skimpy and had little duck flavor. The big disappointment was the iron skillet mussels-at Castro's, it was a wonderfully simply poaching in wine, garlic and a little sea salt. Here, they were drowned with adobo and seasoning to the point that the flavor of the mussels was buried.

Noisy, rushed and marginal food don't warrant a second visit from me.

The restaurant has a significantly pared down lunch menu. This is unfortunate, as most of the more appealing dishes aren't on it.

The "guacamole" sampler was like a food service variety, creamy smooth avocado spread. It was a completely misfire. The rest of our meal(s) could best be described as "meh." All of our meals were memorable if only for being forgettable.

In truth, the best thing about lunch was/were the plantain chips that came with the avocado spread.

All told, it was a very expensive lunch for what we had.

Looking for an authentic local Mexican meal with an upscale flair, you #MustTry Sol Y Luna. I missed the opportunity to try it years ago and grateful the concept is back now. I love the starters the chips that comes with fried plantains and the homemade salsas. The crispy flautas are also a great option. For your meal tempt your palate with his whipped sweet potato yams & fried shrimp. Pair it with a hand made classic margarita. Sol Y Luna is a great place for date night or girl’s night out. They offer patio seating & the staff is amazing. The best part is it is locally owned and operated and it is my mission to support as many locals as possible. Also grateful they allow me to bring in my tour groups so I can introduce them to the amazing food. It is #JoyApproved!

Well you call ahead a day before for outside closed area Patio reservations and get asked to come late in the evening , an hour before closing since only that time is available. Drive all the way to find out that you get some open air table and chairs set up near a trash can next to their main door since only that is available. The lady was friendly and tried to help by tying to get a small inside table but for someone who tried to call and reserve ahead the experience was real bad since folks in our group had to drive from diff parts of town to get here to meet up

Response to owner :
Sorry. Not sure where the miscommunication occured. The friend who made the reservation says otherwise. Yes we did tell the lady we r going to the rooftop place across from your place since you didn't have any outdoor availability. The table inside that was offered hardly would fit 6 but we were 8. The waitress stood and talked with a co worker till I stood up and asked for the check. I hardly do reviews, but this place was not what we expected. It's a little pricey, and for the money, I expect good service. Not what we had. Again, the food was good, but more boutique than what you would think of as 'Mexican.'

Unfortunately, I cannot give 0 stars. This was one of my worst culinary experiences yet. We had to wait more than one hour to sit outside in loose metal chairs. This was during the pandemic, though there was a tiny and symbolic sign to use masks, no one used masks in the cramped; also unsanitary waiting area was, that was also divided with the place where people would eat. The table we sat at (and the ones around) was(were) uncleaned, and everything looked utterly unsanitary (please see the picture of the menu itself). After ordering, the waiters were utterly unaware of the correct orders, they would forget to bring specific meals and drinks, and whenever new requests were to be given to them, they would completely ignore the client. Additionally, our group was in eight, and waiters did not provide us with napkins or enough silverware to eat our food (e.g., only three were handed out). The food was a complete letdown - very salty and lacking its main ingredients (the chicken taco did not have any chicken in it) - the price is not worth it. A DJ was putting the same beats over and over again, making the atmosphere tedious. They made us pay a service charge (without specifying how much), which also did not reflect the quality that was employed. I would not recommend anyone attending this restaurant.

Loved the grilled salmon and added shrimp, our server Summer was cool. They have some type of specialty drink with tamarind in it that's delicious!

Great food and probably the best mexican food in town. Lobster tacos are a must. The only negative feedback I have is the hostess was fairly rude. We asked about sitting outside and she said "umm it's Friday so we are quite busy." with quite an attitude then refused to say how long a wait would be. It wasn't that busy but it was a very strange interaction. I would still recommend going for some tapas.

Truly Tapas, w/great selections to choose from. There were 5 hungry folks there & we ordered 5 dishes that were all different in taste & presentation. Duck empanadas are the Bomb.
Only recommendation is get better chairs to set in. We had 6'7", 6'4" & 6'2 at our table. Better chairs we might have stayed longer w/eats & drinks.

Fresh and fantastic Mexican fare!
Truly unlike any place in Birmingham because of the creative food flavor profile pairings.
A must dine for authentic flavor aficionados.

Great good and great service! The employees did a great job trying to get everyone to wear their masks even when people were rude about it. We really enjoyed our dinner tonight. Great place to go for Birmingham Restaurant Week!

My friend and I picked this spot on a whim when one of our favorite places was temporarily closed and Sol Y Luna did not disappoint! Such an eclectic ambiance including beautiful string lights and blown glass light fixtures. The service was wonderful, and the churros were probably my favorite part! My friend chose one of the three Malbecs available though they have a fun selection of margaritas, as well, along with a good variety of wine and other drink options. I look forward to returning and trying more small plates next time. Thank you!

A beautiful restaurant with gorgeous lighting. A Dia de los Muertos inspired mural creates a colorful and inspiring feel to the restaurant. The food is amazing from the guacamole to the savory lobster tacos, and the drinks are out of this world. The Sol y Luna margarita is the best- a little spicy and sweet! I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who loves good food, fantastic service, and an ambient atmosphere!

Nice place, nice staff but sassy owner. Didn’t like the way she treated me. They want to look like a nice fancy restaurant, but I didn’t see it at all. The food wasn’t that great and the service was so so. Don’t want to go again!!!

This was our first visit and we were very disappointed and a little angry. After waiting for our food for one hour, we told our waitress that we were leaving. The food may be very good, but we will never know. Did get a prickly pear margarita after long wait, but I can only describe it as insipid. No frozen margarita available. No vegetarian options.

They are really striving to provide concierge service. Staff was friendly and helpful! Portions are tapas, small plates, which makes it hard for a mans appetite so you have to get a couple of plates to share. The taste of the food was fun! Definitely a different trend on Mexican food with a focus on seafood.
