Edit: I've never worked for this establishment.

We went last night for a late company Christmas party. The space is beautifully decorated. Our server was very kind but I could tell she was overwhelmed and disorganized. I had to ask for a water 3 times before receiving one. Me and my partner split the combo fajitas. Our sides for the fajitas were dropped on the table 10 minutes before our fajitas arrived leaving the rice and beans to be cold. The fajitas were just okay. On the bottom it's melted cheese, onions and peppers and then they had placed all the meat on top. The chicken was juicy which was nice but overly seasoned with what appeared to be cinnamon? The steak was dry and under seasoned. The shrimp were juicy but very salty. My margarita had 5 pieces of ice in it and I'm not exaggerating. $15 for an overly acidic top shelf margarita with no ice. We had to ask for sides of ice for the table. We ordered a shrimp cocktail once our friend got hers because it looked so good but that never came. That was disappointing. Dessert we ordered the churros and the flan for the table. I didn't try the flan so I'm uncertain how it was. The churros were hot and tasty but there was a lingering flavor of old oil they probably need to change the oil in the fryer. Overall a very subpar experience. Its unlikely that we will dine here again for nights out.

This is by far the worst Mexican food I've ever had.
Greasy, cold, flavorless fajitas. Dry salty steak with cinnamon on it. Thin, greasy, over cooked vegetables with greasy melted cheese on top, atop that, cold, flavorless meat .
Churros tasted like they were definitely cooked in dirty/old fryer grease.
Margaritas were overly acidic with barely any ice In them . Took 15 min to get another one after ordering. Barely checked on the whole time.
Abysmal service, had to ask for water 4 times, didn't receive things we ordered. Waiter had no organization, could not figure out where any of the food was supposed to be dropped.
Nice interior, but that's about it. This is definitely white people Mexican food done super poorly.
Also, the menus are printed on just regular paper, off center, in black and white. In a format where everything is crammed together. Trying to save paper or what?? Tacky. Especially since they are charging A LOT for the bad food they serve. El Zun Zun? El No Thank You🫠😵‍💫😵👎👎👎👎👎

Edit
To the owner calling me a liar and threatening to use "authorities" , whatever that means, to get to the bottom of it. Get a grip. Your food sucks and your response is disrespectful and delusional at best. Maybe fix your problems instead of calling everyone who has a problem with how you operate a liar.

I never write reviews, but mostly try to let my wallet and continued business be my review. However, my family and I have been coming for years and years, and it is honestly one of our favorite restaurants in town. The crew that works there has been there a long time, which is usually an indication of a good operator. Leah, the GM, and pretty much the face of the restaurant is genuinely kind to everyone from the crew, to her guests, as well as the vendors who supply the restaurant. One of the best front of the house people in this city, and a high quality human being

The salsas that get dropped (red and green) are made from scratch and have incredible deep flavors. We also love the queso fundido, guac, tortilla soup, and Mexican coctel de camerones. The entrees you really cant go wrong. I don't order Molé in many places in the south, but ZunZun I absolutely will, with happiness. do. Someone made a review that said it was "white people Mexican" which I think is pretty offensive to everyone, and also not true. There were some accommodations that had to be made to cater to the needs of the neighborhood, but the true Mexican dishes that they take a shot at, are actually pretty close approximations to what you might find in certain regions in Mexico. As someone who has travelled extensively through Mexico, I feel I am in a position to make this claim.

Don't sleep on the churros with dulce de leche, or the tres leches cake. Check out ZunZun and you won't be disappointed.

I tried the restaurant for the first time after hearing great things about their house made pork skins with queso. I ordered an 8 oz queso with the skins but got home and realized it was not 8 oz. I called restaurant and was met with attitude and hostility. The owner insisted she was right I was wrong even after I poured the container in a measuring cup to show it was barely 4 oz. She stated she was right because she’d been in business 35 years and if true she’s been cheating people for 35 years.

It's white people Mexican food. I did enjoy that they give you two kinds of salsa with your chips. But They wanted eight bucks for a small queso, which was not worth it after trying it. I got the fajitas and you could tell the chicken was from a premade frozen bag. I'll say the Margaritas were tasty but for 10 bucks a pop they were on the small side. If they had a happy hour I would consider going by just for drinks. Otherwise I would pass and go to Las Trojas Cantina 10 minutes down highway 280. Vastly superior food and drinks.

Ok. Not great. It had been awhile since we had visited. Underwhelming as it was before. Started off with Hostess trying to give me a horribly dirty place may. Had to ask for a new clean one. Without boring details - good we ordered was not good. Best thing was the queso dip. That’s all.

How can you possibly go wrong at this little jewel of a restaurant in Cahaba Heights? If you’re looking for authentic, creative dishes at a reasonable price, call in your order during the quarantine or use Door Dash. Our office had the taco salad, queso, shrimp fajitas, roasted chicken tacos, steak fajitas, tortilla soup, and street corn last week. My staff were literally fighting over the leftovers! Support a local business and get a fantastic meal in the process!

-------------------------------------
Another fantastic meal and experience here this weekend. We had chicken and cheese, enchiladas, queso, and chips and iced tea. Great service, reasonable price, and we are always greeted by the manager and other staff and made to feel at home. Although we've been several times since, only my original review during Covid was posted. Don't forget about this locally owned treasure when you are looking for lunch or dinner or drinks.

We're back for our second visit after a really good experience about a month ago. For a not busyThursday night, the service was terrible...really terrible. Took forever to get even water (don't expect any ice!). Took a while to have our orders taken. Food was average but nothing spectacular and not nearly as good or fresh tasting like our meal about a month or so ago. The waiter never asked if we wanted water refills, or another drink...or if the food was ok or not. He was basically just not interested. It's a shame but I doubt we go back.

I paid $19 for a steak quesadilla that didn't include sides (although the menu did include them), and when I asked they said I could add them. I did this not realizing that a bowl rice and beans would cost $7 each. The queso was the only good food I had and it was $9 for a small bowl.

Once I finished my meal and got the check, I realized that I'd been scammed. They charged me $54 for my meal and I wasn't feeling well. I jumped up from the table and rushed to the bathroom. I promptly evacuated the contents of my stomach into their commode (where it belongs). During this process, I also realized that the sweet tea was instant tea that had a strong red color on the way out and turned the toilet water into tea.

TLDR: They charged me $54 for food that made me vomit.

Published 8 months ago

Review №25

The quality of the food was, to be frank, unacceptable given the price. The tacos were flavorless and dry. The salsa was wasn’t much better, either. It doesn’t help that, during my time here, my friend vomited immediately after finishing his plate.

Overall, I was disappointed in all aspects of this dining experience.

One of our favorite places to visit! Every item on the menu we have tried has been delicious! The ingredients are fresh and beautifully presented. Favorite dishes are the Pork Carnitas, Hummingbird Queso, Guacamole, and the Hummingbird Margarita. The atmosphere is colorful and inviting. Whenever we visit the staff is always so pleasant and accommodating. Truly a hidden gem and one I'm glad that found! (NOTE: if you are looking for a typical "mexican" restaurant with green margaritas and food covered in white cheese and pureed salsa, then this is not your place. El Zun Zun serves fresh, thoughtful dishes and cocktails.)

While the atmosphere is great, the service is alright as well as the food. For the price you pay, you’d think you’ll get great quality- it’s average food. I ordered enchiladas with ground beef and they were okay. The salsa is warm and tastes like a chargrilled pepper. The queso was great! The guacamole had pumpkin or sunflower seeds which threw me off- as well as sweet taste. The server was in a rush- moving very quickly. I appreciate the twist to Latin food- but I’m going to stick to the places I know!

Response to RSS: What is considered difficult or rude? Did we complain and ask for a manager (NO). We just assimilated. Did your server get a generous tip although he lacked service, tact and professionalism (YES). You are in a service industry which means going above and beyond to please is the goal. Overall the food was pretty good. I didn’t care for the salsa being warm temperature wise, but that’s just my opinion. Service was good and my server was nice and prompt. I was sad to watch how many employees played with their phones instead of helping guests. I watched the hostess totally ignore a family waiting to be sat while she played some game on her phone. I watched the bar tender and other severs constantly play with their phones as well. Once I asked for a napkin and was totally ignored by the person as they had headphones on and didn’t even hear or acknowledge me. I expect good service at restaurants where the guest care is more important than a cell phone. This resulted in a much lower score than what I would have given. Management should address the phones. Even now as I’m writing this 5 employees are on their phones while I’m sitting here waiting for a check….not good service.

I came alone and asked if I could be seated outside, I was immediately told no because they were short staffed and the outside area was closed… (mind you no one else was in the restaurant at this time. It was empty except for me)… No problem though. I was seated inside and ordered my food. NOT EVEN 30 MINUTES LATER a group of white people walked in and wouldn’t you know it, I see them being seated outside. I brought this up to my waiter and the woman who originally told me it was a closed area, but by then my appetite was gone. I don’t think I’ll be coming back.

Absolutely delicious. I love me some good Mexican food like anyone else so I was definitely surprised by how good the food is. I went plain and simple and got the adobo chicken quesadilla and it was super good. The service was also great and the atmosphere of this place is very relaxed and enjoyable. Their sweet tea is also very good and unique, you'll have to give it a shot to know what I mean. I highly recommend this place if you wanna enjoy some good food and good times!

Awesone experience. Food was great. Everything was so fresh and full of flavor. Best Mexican resturant in town so far that we've tried. Staff was very friendly too. Pictured are the Fajitas and a Taco Salad.

The food drips with Mexican authenticity. The al pastor (spicy bits of delicious pork) is as good as I've had anywhere. All the details are attended to without a hefty price. Wonderful!

The food was fresh and the restaurant was clean. Service was slow as we were only one of three couples there. Still a great spot!

Enjoyed a nice lunch here. Everything we had was good with the exception of the street corn. Not much flavor in the street corn, which is served in a bowl, seemed the corn was from a can.

Ignore the bad reviews and go try this place!! I got the taco salad with beef, high quality! Loved the warm salsa ! At first I thought it was pricey but it’s not for how good it is. Will be back soon.

The service was very good. The food was not bad. It did not feel very flavorful, I would have liked more spice in my food. I still prefer taco trucks.

Very slow and poor service. My fajitas would have been good if they were hot. I got half steak & chicken, charged steak price plus $5 . Chips were good. Waitress was nice though. For $70 , we could have ate at Perrys.

A hidden gem for Mexican cuisine. Much cleaner than traditional Tex mex and somehow tastier. Margaritas are simple and top notch, churros are insane. Service is consistently excellent (especially Renata). Outside patio next to nursery is picturesque and pleasant.

Good service, good food, good porch. Food had some spice (good!) and they offered grilled vegetables as substitute for meat but I am pretty sure the beans and - at least some sauces - had meat in it. I have to admit that I did not ask for vegetarian. 1 1/2 years of Covid let me forget that not everybody will assume that I am a vegetarian just because I ask if I can have nachos without meat and order the cheese enchiladas, which were very well prepared and at least 2 levels above middle-down the line restaurants. I am confident that they will accommodate all and every "expression of my individuality diets" if possible at all.
